HvyColumn Slice draws its inspiration from the unearthed architecture of ancient archaeological sites like the Roman Forum, encompassing temples, basilicas, arches, and columns. The typeface is derived from a cross-section of the 20-fluted Roman Doric column, with its geometry reflecting a radial grid that mirrors the fluted design. These flutes, originally crafted to enhance the play of light and shadow in Roman architecture, accentuate the letterforms in HvyColumn Slice.

Designed for both 2D and 3D spaces, each letterform is sculpted by carving out negative space, akin to chiseling a block of stone, much like the construction of the original columns. In a 3D environment, these letterforms can be stacked to form columns or yield to gravity, tumbling down to emulate the archaeological ruins from which they draw inspiration. HvyColumn Slice is featured through a microsite with a series of interactions and typetesters and is published under the open font license so that others can create their own typographic ruins.
